The Blessings of Water: Environmental and Islamic Perspective | Green Economy

Introduction

Water is one of the greatest blessings bestowed upon humanity. It is the foundation of life, the basis of ecosystems, and an essential resource for economic development. Without water, life cannot exist on Earth. The Qur’an and Hadith repeatedly emphasize its importance, purity, and responsible use.

"Fresh water illustrating environmental stewardship and Islamic blessings"

1. Water as the Source of Life

Water is essential for all living beings. The Qur’an states:

وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ ۖ أَفَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

(Sūrat al-Anbiyāʾ 21:30)

Translation: “And We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?”

This verse highlights water as the origin of all life and its central role in ecological systems.

2. Water and Natural Processes

Water plays a vital role in natural processes such as climate regulation, vegetation growth, and ecosystem renewal. Allah says:

(Sūrat al-Naḥl 16:65)

Translation: “And We send down water from the sky and give life thereby to the earth after its death.”

This reflects the hydrological cycle and the revival of barren land through rainfall, demonstrating water’s environmental significance.

3. Water and Plant Growth

Water is essential for photosynthesis, the process through which plants produce food. The Qur’an states:

وَهُوَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَخْرَجْنَا بِهِ نَبَاتَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ

(Sūrat al-Anʿām 6:99)

Translation: “And it is He who sends down water from the sky, and We produce thereby the growth of all things.”

This verse emphasizes water’s role in plant growth, food production, and the foundation of terrestrial life.

4. Water for Agriculture and Food Production

Water sustains agriculture and ensures food security. Allah says:

(Sūrat al-Naḥl 16:11)

Translation: “He causes crops, olives, palm trees, grapevines, and all kinds of fruits to grow for you…”

Rainfall supports agriculture, economic activity, and human sustenance.

5. Water for Human Needs

Water is indispensable for daily human life, including:

  • Drinking
  • Cooking
  • Washing and cleaning
  • Irrigation and agriculture
  • Blood composition and bodily functions

Allah says:

(Sūrat al-Furqān 25:48)

Translation: “And We sent down from the sky pure water.”

This emphasizes water’s purity and its importance for health and cleanliness.

6. Water as a Divine Blessing

Water is a valuable natural resource and a blessing from Allah. The Qur’an says:

وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمْ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ

(Sūrat al-Jāthiyah 45:13)

Translation: “And He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.”

Rivers, seas, rainfall, and water systems are provided for human benefit, supporting agriculture, fisheries, transportation, and hydropower.

7. Water in Purification and Cleanliness (Hadith)

Cleanliness is a fundamental part of Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

الطُّهُورُ شَطْرُ الإِيمَانِ

(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 223)

Translation: “Purity is half of faith.”

Water is used for wudu (ablution) and ghusl (ritual bath), emphasizing its spiritual importance.

8. Water as Charity (Hadith)

Providing water to others is among the greatest acts of charity. The Prophet ﷺ said:

(Musnad Aḥmad 23489)

Translation: “The best charity is providing water.”

This encourages social responsibility and community welfare.

9. Prohibition of Wasting Water (Hadith)

Islam teaches moderation and forbids wastefulness. The Prophet ﷺ said:

(Sunan Ibn Mājah 425)

Translation: “Do not waste water, even if you are at a flowing river.”

This Hadith establishes sustainable consumption and environmental ethics.                                                                                             Personal Observation

In my opinion, the availability of water plays a decisive role in the quality of life in any community. In my village, agricultural activities and daily life depend greatly on the availability of water. If water resources were not accessible, the situation would be completely different from what we experience today.

Agriculture in our area is possible mainly because irrigation water is available for crops and fields. Farmers rely on this water for cultivating wheat, vegetables, and other crops that support the local economy and provide livelihoods for many families. Water therefore acts as a foundation for food production and economic stability in rural areas.

In contrast, regions that lack sufficient water resources often face serious challenges. Limited water availability affects agriculture, reduces food production, and can also influence health, education, and overall community development. When water is scarce, people struggle to maintain their livelihoods, and economic progress becomes more difficult.

For this reason, protecting water resources and using them wisely is extremely important. Sustainable water management, conservation practices, and responsible use of water can help ensure that communities continue to benefit from this essential natural resource.

From both an environmental and Islamic perspective, water should be treated as a precious blessing. Conserving it, sharing it fairly, and avoiding waste are necessary steps to maintain sustainability and support future generations.

Conclusion

Water is a priceless blessing from Allah, essential for life, ecosystems, agriculture, and human survival. The Qur’an and Hadith emphasize its purity, value, and responsible use.

Islam teaches that water must be conserved, shared, and used wisely. Protecting water resources is both an environmental responsibility and a religious duty. Sustainable water management ensures health, life, and prosperity for present and future generations.

Through the perspective of Green Economy and Islam, water conservation becomes a pathway toward sustainable development—where environmental stewardship and spiritual accountability go hand in hand.

Honey Bees, Environmental Sustainability, and the Green Economy in Islam

Introduction Honey bees are among the most remarkable creatures in the natural world. Despite their small size, they play a critical role in maintaining ecological balance and supporting global food systems. Their importance extends far beyond honey production; honey bees contribute to biodiversity, agricultural productivity, and environmental sustainability. From the perspective of a green economy, honey bees are essential for sustainable agricultural systems and ecological stability. A green economy emphasizes responsible use of natural resources, protection of ecosystems, and economic development that benefits both society and the environment. Islamic teachings also recognize the importance of natural systems and encourage humans to reflect upon the signs of Allah present in creation. The role of honey bees in nature is so significant that an entire chapter of the Qur’an is named after them: Surah An-Nahl (The Bee). At Green Economy and Islam , the goal is to explore how environment...

The Role of Seasons in Environmental Balance and Sustainable Agriculture in the Light of Islam

Introduction The Earth operates through a carefully balanced system in which natural processes support life and maintain environmental stability. Among the most visible and important of these natural processes is the cycle of the four seasons. Spring, summer, autumn, and winter together create a dynamic pattern that supports agriculture, biodiversity, climate balance, and ecological renewal. Each season brings unique environmental conditions that allow plants, animals, and ecosystems to grow, adapt, and survive. The alternation of seasons ensures that the Earth continues to produce food, maintain soil fertility, and sustain diverse forms of life. From a scientific perspective, seasonal changes occur due to the tilt of the Earth's axis and its movement around the Sun. From a spiritual perspective, many people see the order and harmony in nature as signs of wisdom in creation. In many parts of the world, particularly in regions that experience four distinct seasons, this natural cycl...

Economic Development in the Light of Green Economy and Islam

Introduction Economic development is one of the central concerns of modern economic theory. Economists and policymakers seek to understand how nations can increase prosperity, improve living standards, and provide better opportunities for their citizens. Traditionally, economic development has been measured by indicators such as national income, industrial growth, and productivity. At Green Economy and Islam , we aim to explore economic theories through the lens of sustainability and Islamic ethical teachings. Instead of focusing solely on material growth, this perspective examines how economic development can be aligned with environmental responsibility, social justice, and moral values. One important definition of economic development was given by the economists Gerald M. Meier and Robert E. Baldwin. According to them: “Economic Development is a process whereby an economy’s real national income increases over a long period of time, and if the rate of development is greater than the ...
