Introduction
Allah is the Creator of the universe. The vastness and complexity of creation are beyond human imagination. Humans strive to explore the hidden realities of the universe, but the knowledge granted to them is limited. Despite all our efforts, we cannot create even a single mosquito, produce matter from nothing, or fully understand the forces governing the universe.
Even the soul (النفس) is beyond human comprehension. Allah says in the Qur’an:
“And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about the soul. Say, ‘The soul is of the affair of my Lord. And mankind has not been given of knowledge except a little.’”
(Surah Al-Isra 17:85)
This reminds us that while humans can observe nature and its systems, the essence of life and the soul is divine knowledge, accessible only through Allah.
The Qur’an further states:
“We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. Is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?”
(Surah Fussilat 41:53)
These verses emphasize that nature and the soul themselves reflect divine wisdom, offering guidance on balance, order, and sustainability. Verse about the Limits of the Universe
Surah Ar-Rahman (55:33)
Translation
“O company of jinn and mankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not pass except by authority.”
The Role of Nature in Sustainability
Allah has created an intricate system where every component plays a critical role in sustaining life:
- Producers (plants and trees) generate food and oxygen.
- Consumers (animals and humans) depend on producers for sustenance.
- Decomposers (microorganisms and fungi) recycle nutrients back to the soil.
Even the bees, remarkable creatures, obey Allah’s command:
“And your Lord inspired the bee, saying: ‘Take for yourself among the mountains, houses, and the trees, and in what they build. Then eat from all the fruits and follow the paths of your Lord made easy for you.’ From their bellies comes a drink of varying colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for people who reflect.”
(Surah An-Nahl 16:68-69)
This demonstrates divine balance, sustainability, and resource provision. Sustainability in the Universe: Signs of Balance and Divine Order
The Solar System, galaxies, the Milky Way, and the countless twinkling stars present a breathtaking and magnificent view of the universe. From every perspective, their beauty, harmony, and precise movements reflect an extraordinary order. The universe appears balanced, sustainable, secure, and continuously maintained.
Every celestial body moves in a defined orbit with remarkable precision. The planets revolve around the sun, moons revolve around planets, and galaxies travel through vast cosmic systems. Despite the unimaginable size and complexity of the universe, a remarkable balance and sustainability is maintained among them.
Modern science continues to discover the laws governing gravity, motion, energy, and matter. Yet, the deeper one studies the cosmos, the clearer it becomes that the universe is not chaotic but profoundly organized. This harmony allows life to exist on Earth and maintains the delicate conditions necessary for survival.
The beauty of the universe—from the shining sun and the calming moon to the distant galaxies and shimmering stars—invites reflection. Islam encourages human beings to observe the universe and recognize the signs of Allah in creation, which reflect wisdom, balance, and sustainability.
Qur’anic Perspective on Cosmic Balance
The Qur’an repeatedly invites humanity to observe the universe and reflect upon its harmony and balance.
The Balance in Creation
“And the heaven He raised and established the balance, so that you may not transgress the balance.”
(Qur’an 55:7–8)
This verse highlights that the universe is created with a perfect system of balance (مِيزَان)—a concept closely related to sustainability.
Orbits of the Sun and Moon
“The sun and the moon move according to precise calculation.”
(Qur’an 55:5)
The movements of celestial bodies follow precise laws that ensure stability in the cosmic system.
The System of Orbits
“It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor does the night outstrip the day; each is swimming in its orbit.”
(Qur’an 36:40)
This verse beautifully describes the cosmic order and sustainability of the universe.
Human Knowledge and Boats in the Qur’an
Allah has also given humans knowledge to navigate nature, including principles of water, buoyancy, and shipbuilding. Ships and trade are mentioned as part of Allah’s blessings:
“And it is He who has subjected the sea for you so that ships may sail through it by His command and that you may seek of His bounty, and perhaps you will be grateful.”
(Surah Al-Jathiya 45:12)
Islamic Perspective on Stewardship
Humans are Khalifah (Stewards) of the Earth, responsible for maintaining balance:
“Indeed, I will place a steward on the Earth.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:30)
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized planting trees and nurturing plants as continuous charity (Sadaqah):
“If a Muslim plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, a person, or an animal eats from it, it is regarded as charity for him.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
“If the Day of Judgment comes while one of you has a plant seedling in his hand, he should plant it if he is able to do so.”
(Musnad Ahmad)
Lessons for Green Economy
A Green Economy encourages economic growth that is environmentally sustainable and socially just. Applying Islamic teachings:
- Use resources responsibly – avoid waste and overexploitation.
- Maintain ecological balance – respect the roles of producers, consumers, and decomposers.
- Apply human knowledge ethically – trade, agriculture, renewable energy, and water management.
- Innovation and trade – such as ships and commerce, should benefit humanity without harming the ecosystem.
Personal Reflection on Knowledge and Understanding Creation
From my personal perspective, acquiring knowledge in different fields is essential for understanding both the human self and the universe. Knowledge enables a person to reflect on the inner world (self-awareness, soul, and purpose) as well as the outer world (nature, environment, and the universe).
Human beings are regarded as Ashraf-ul-Makhluqat (the noblest of creation), and with this honor comes responsibility. To fulfill this responsibility, a person must seek knowledge that helps in recognizing truth, understanding creation, and maintaining balance in life.
In my own journey, I have studied various fields including environmental science, Islam, education, science and technology, computer studies, as well as the Qur’an and Hadith. This diverse learning has helped me realize that true knowledge is interconnected. Each field contributes to a deeper understanding of reality, nature, and the purpose of human existence.
I believe that gaining true and beneficial knowledge is essential for every individual. It not only improves personal development but also helps in understanding the signs of Allah in the universe. Through knowledge, a person becomes more aware, responsible, and capable of contributing positively to society and the environment. Conclusion
Nature, the soul, and human knowledge are divinely interconnected systems. Islam teaches that humans are stewards of the Earth, responsible for protecting ecosystems, using resources wisely, and ensuring sustainability.
Observing Allah’s signs in plants, bees, rivers, seas, and ships demonstrates balance, sustainability, and ethical responsibility. These principles align perfectly with the modern concept of a Green Economy, where economic development, social welfare, and ecological protection coexist harmoniously. The universe—with its galaxies, stars, planets, and cosmic systems—demonstrates a remarkable model of sustainability and balance. Modern science explores these systems through observation and calculation, while the Qur’an encourages reflection upon them as signs of divine wisdom.
Islam teaches that the balance observed in the cosmos should inspire humanity to maintain balance on Earth as well. Protecting nature, preserving resources, and acting responsibly toward the environment are not only scientific or social duties but also spiritual responsibilities.
Thus, the harmony of the universe serves as a reminder that sustainability is embedded in creation itself, inviting humanity to live in accordance with this divine balance.
