Introduction
In today’s world, individuals and nations aspire to prosperity, comfort, and a high standard of living. People desire financial stability, modern homes, good health, clean air, pure water, fertile land, and overall well-being. Similarly, nations aim to become economically strong, self-sufficient, and capable of providing security, infrastructure, and essential resources for their citizens. Leaders often envision their countries as models of justice, stability, and prosperity—a true “heaven on Earth.”
However, achieving these goals is not possible without peace. Peace is the foundation upon which sustainable development, environmental balance, and the principles of a Green Economy can flourish. Islam also emphasizes harmony, justice, and responsible stewardship of the Earth, guiding humanity toward balanced and ethical prosperity.
Individual and National Aspirations in the Light of Green Economy and Islam
Individuals and nations share similar aspirations.
For individuals: financial stability, comfortable living, good health, clean environment, and a sustainable lifestyle.
For nations: economic growth, security, strong infrastructure, and the welfare of their citizens.
Green Economy Perspective
The Green Economy promotes development without harming the environment. It ensures that:
- Economic progress does not exhaust natural resources
- Energy, water, and land are used responsibly
- Pollution is minimized and ecosystems are protected
- Future generations inherit a healthy planet
By following these principles, both individuals and nations can achieve prosperity while maintaining environmental balance.
Islamic Perspective on Sustainability
Islam teaches moderation, responsibility, and care for the environment. The Qur’an clearly instructs:
Arabic:
وَلَا تُسْرِفُوا ۚ إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِينَ
Translation:
“Do not be wasteful; indeed, He does not love the wasteful.” (Surah Al-A‘raf 7:31)
This verse highlights the importance of avoiding excess and using resources wisely. Islam encourages humans to act as stewards (Khalifah) of the Earth, ensuring justice, balance, and sustainability in all aspects of life.
Peace: The Most Important Prerequisite
The success of a Green Economy and the well-being of society depend fundamentally on peace. Without peace, neither individuals nor nations can achieve sustainable development or prosperity.
Peace as a Foundation
Peace enables countries to:
- Implement renewable energy and clean technologies
- Promote sustainable agriculture
- Protect biodiversity and ecosystems
- Ensure economic stability and social justice
Even resource-rich nations cannot achieve long-term prosperity without peace and stability.
Islamic Perspective on Peace
Islam strongly emphasizes peace, justice, and harmony. The Qur’an states:
Arabic:
وَإِن جَنَحُوا لِلسَّلْمِ فَاجْنَحْ لَهَا
Translation:
“And if they incline to peace, then incline to it.” (Surah Al-Anfal 8:61)
This guidance encourages dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence.
Another verse emphasizes justice:
Arabic:
وَأَقِيمُوا الْوَزْنَ بِالْقِسْطِ وَلَا تُخْسِرُوا النَّاسَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ
Translation:
“Establish justice in balance and do not diminish the people’s wealth.” (Surah Al-An’am 6:152)
Justice and peace together create the foundation for economic growth and environmental sustainability.
Peace Before Economic Prosperity: The Prayer of Prophet Ibrahim (A.S)
The Qur’an beautifully demonstrates that peace comes before prosperity. Prophet Ibrahim (A.S) prayed:
Arabic:
رَبِّ اجْعَلْ هَٰذَا بَلَدًا آمِنًا وَارْزُقْ أَهْلَهُ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ
Translation:
“My Lord, make this a secure (peaceful) city and provide its people with fruits.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:126)
Another verse states:
Arabic:
رَبِّ اجْعَلْ هَٰذَا الْبَلَدَ آمِنًا
Translation:
“My Lord, make this city secure.”
(Surah Ibrahim 14:35)
These verses clearly show the order:
- First: Peace (Security)
- Then: Provision (Economic prosperity)
Without peace, economic growth and sustainability cannot be achieved.
Connection to Green Economy
This Qur’anic principle aligns perfectly with the Green Economy, which requires:
- Stable and peaceful societies
- Responsible use of resources
- Long-term planning and sustainability
Without peace, environmental projects fail, natural resources are destroyed, and economic systems collapse.
Role of Peace in Improving Living Standards (Local Example)
Without peace, no population can improve its standard of living. In regions where peace exists, people enjoy better lifestyles compared to areas facing instability.
In peaceful environments, governments can successfully launch development projects. These projects improve agriculture, infrastructure, education, and overall quality of life.
For example, in my district Charsadda, there was a serious issue of waterlogging and salinity affecting agricultural land. Due to peaceful conditions, a major project called SCARP (Salinity Control and Reclamation Project) was launched in 1990. This project was successfully implemented in Charsadda as well as in other districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Mardan and Swabi. As a result, agricultural land was restored, productivity increased, and farmers improved their livelihoods.
Similarly, other development initiatives became possible due to peace, including:
- Solar energy projects
- Installation of water wells and hand pumps
- Construction of roads
- Development of colleges and sports complexes
These efforts significantly improved the living standards of the local population. This example clearly shows that peace is essential for economic growth, environmental sustainability, and community development.
Peace, Conflict, and Environmental Degradation (Global Perspective)
At the global level, the absence of peace leads to serious environmental damage. Conflicts and instability shift focus away from environmental protection toward survival and defense.
As a result:
- Forests are destroyed
- Water resources become polluted
- Agricultural lands are damaged
- Wildlife habitats are lost
Environmental policies and sustainability initiatives are often ignored during conflicts.
In today’s world, some regions face continuous instability, pushing the environment toward severe degradation. This shows that without global peace, efforts to promote a Green Economy cannot succeed.
Peace and Global Sustainability
Organizations like the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) emphasize environmental protection, reforestation, and biodiversity conservation. However, these efforts require peace to succeed.
Peace enables:
- Reforestation and afforestation programs
- Protection of natural ecosystems
- Clean energy development
- Fair access to natural resources
Islamic teachings and modern environmental principles both highlight that peace, justice, and responsibility are essential for a sustainable future.
Conclusion
Peace is not just a moral ideal—it is the foundation of sustainable development and a Green Economy. A peaceful society allows individuals to thrive, nations to prosper, and the environment to remain balanced.
The prayer of Prophet Ibrahim (A.S) clearly teaches that peace comes before prosperity. Without security, neither economic development nor environmental sustainability can be achieved.
By combining the principles of Green Economy with Islamic teachings, humanity can achieve:
- Prosperity without harming nature
- Environmental balance for future generations
- Justice, fairness, and responsible resource management
Peace, sustainability, and ethical stewardship together create the foundation for a better and more prosperous world.
