Despite these challenges, certain environmentally friendly agricultural practices are being used by local farmers. For example, I have observed the use of greenhouses and plastic tunnel systems that help crops grow earlier in the season. Some farmers also use natural fertilizers such as animal manure instead of relying entirely on chemical fertilizers, although in some cases dried dung is still used as fuel rather than fertilizer.
Modern irrigation improvements are also visible in certain areas. Concrete irrigation canals help reduce water loss, and solar-powered tube wells are gradually being introduced to support irrigation while reducing dependence on conventional energy sources. Farmers also practice crop rotation, agroforestry, poultry farming, and animal husbandry, which contribute to agricultural sustainability.
In addition, modern agricultural machinery such as threshers and wheat-cutting machines is increasingly used to improve productivity. Hybrid seeds are also commonly used to increase crop yields and support food production.
However, some agricultural practices still raise environmental concerns. For example, the burning of crop residues after harvesting contributes to air pollution and damages soil health. The widespread use of chemical pesticides is also problematic, as these chemicals can harm birds, butterflies, honeybees, and other beneficial organisms that are important for ecological balance and pollination.
These observations suggest that while some elements of green agricultural technology are present in the region, greater awareness, education, and financial support are needed to encourage farmers to adopt more environmentally sustainable practices. Government programs, agricultural extension services, and community education initiatives could play an important role in promoting green technologies that align with both environmental sustainability and the Islamic principle of responsible stewardship of the Earth.
