Use of Green Technology in Agriculture in the Light of Islam

Introduction

Green technology refers to the use of modern, environmentally friendly techniques that increase agricultural productivity while conserving natural resources. In agriculture, green technology aims to produce more food using fewer resources such as water, energy, and land, while minimizing environmental damage. These practices include efficient irrigation systems, renewable energy use, organic fertilizers, soil conservation, and climate-resilient crops.

Sustainable agriculture has become increasingly important as global populations grow and environmental pressures intensify. Conventional farming methods that rely heavily on chemical inputs and excessive water use can harm ecosystems, reduce soil fertility, and contribute to climate change. Green technology offers practical solutions by improving efficiency while protecting the environment.

Islam strongly encourages responsible and balanced use of natural resources. The religion emphasizes moderation (wasatiyyah), accountability, and the protection of the Earth entrusted to humanity. According to Islamic teachings, humans are appointed as Khalifah (stewards) on Earth, which means they are responsible for maintaining environmental balance rather than exploiting nature.

This perspective is further explored in the blog Green Economy and Islam, which examines how modern sustainable development principles align with Islamic teachings on environmental protection, justice, and responsible resource management. By connecting contemporary environmental challenges with Islamic ethical guidance, this approach promotes a model of development that is both economically productive and environmentally responsible.

Green agricultural technology supporting sustainable farming and Islamic principles

Concept of Green Technology in Agriculture

Green technology in agriculture involves innovative practices that enhance productivity while maintaining ecological balance. These technologies reduce pollution, conserve water and soil resources, and support long-term agricultural sustainability.

Key components of green agricultural technology include:

  • renewable energy use
  • precision farming techniques
  • eco-friendly agricultural machinery
  • organic fertilizers and bio-pesticides
  • climate-resilient crop varieties
  • sustainable water management

By adopting these methods, farmers can increase crop production while minimizing environmental damage and preserving natural resources for future generations.

Modern Examples of Green Technology in Agriculture

1. Solar-Powered Agricultural Machinery

Solar-powered equipment such as water pumps, irrigation systems, and lighting units are increasingly used in agriculture. These technologies reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower operational costs for farmers, and minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

2. Drip and Sprinkler Irrigation Systems

Drip and sprinkler irrigation systems deliver water directly to plant roots, significantly reducing water waste compared to traditional irrigation methods. These technologies are particularly valuable in water-scarce regions and improve water-use efficiency.

3. Precision Agriculture

Precision farming uses digital tools such as GPS technology, sensors, and data analysis to apply water, fertilizers, and pesticides only where they are needed. This reduces excessive chemical use, improves soil health, and increases crop yields.

4. High-Yield and Disease-Resistant Seeds

Modern agricultural research has produced seed varieties that are resistant to pests, diseases, and climate stress. These crops allow farmers to achieve higher productivity while using fewer chemical inputs and less agricultural land.

5. Organic Farming and Bio-Fertilizers

Organic farming promotes the use of natural fertilizers such as compost and manure instead of synthetic chemicals. Bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides help maintain soil fertility and control pests naturally, reducing environmental pollution.

6. Rainwater Harvesting and Water Recycling

Rainwater harvesting systems collect and store rainwater for agricultural use. Recycling agricultural wastewater also helps conserve water resources and ensures sustainable irrigation practices.

7. Agroforestry Systems

Agroforestry integrates trees with crops and livestock systems. This method improves soil quality, prevents erosion, enhances biodiversity, and provides additional sources of income for farmers.

Islamic Perspective on Environmental Protection

Islam emphasizes environmental responsibility and sustainable use of natural resources. The Qur’an highlights that humans are appointed as caretakers of the Earth and must manage it wisely.

Qur’an:

هُوَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَكُمْ خَلَـٰٓئِفَ ٱلْأَرْضِ

Translation:

“It is He who has made you successors upon the earth.”

(Surah Al-An‘am 6:165)

This verse reminds humanity that environmental management is a trust from Allah, and humans must use natural resources responsibly.

Prohibition of Wastefulness in Islam

Green technology encourages efficient use of water, energy, and agricultural inputs. Islam also strongly discourages wastefulness.

Qur’an:

وَكُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ وَلَا تُسْرِفُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ

Translation:

“Eat and drink, but do not waste. Indeed, He does not like the wasteful.”

(Surah Al-A‘raf 7:31)

Efficient irrigation systems and energy-saving agricultural technologies reflect this Islamic principle of moderation and responsible consumption.

Balance and Moderation in Resource Use

Islam promotes balance (Mizan) in all aspects of life, including environmental management.

Qur’an:

وَٱلسَّمَآءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ ٱلْمِيزَانَ

أَلَّا تَطْغَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْمِيزَانِ

Translation:

“And the heaven He raised and set up the balance, so that you may not transgress within the balance.”

(Surah Ar-Rahman 55:7–8)

Green agricultural technologies help maintain this balance by reducing environmental damage and ensuring sustainable resource use.

Hadith on Agriculture and Environmental Care

The teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ strongly encourage agriculture and environmental stewardship.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“If a Muslim plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, a person, or an animal eats from it, it is counted as charity for him.”

(Reported in Sahih al-Bukhari)

Another hadith emphasizes compassion toward all living creatures:

“There is a reward for kindness to every living thing.”

(Reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

These teachings highlight that farming, planting trees, and protecting nature are acts of charity and responsibility in Islam.

Role of Green Technology in Fulfilling Islamic Teachings

Modern green technologies enable farmers to implement Islamic principles of stewardship, sustainability, and justice. By adopting environmentally friendly farming practices, agricultural systems can:

  • protect soil and water resources
  • reduce environmental pollution
  • ensure long-term food security
  • support biodiversity
  • safeguard the rights of future generations

In this way, green agricultural practices align both with modern sustainability goals and Islamic ethical teachings.                                                                                                                       Personal Observation

From my personal observation, some practices related to green technology in agriculture can be seen in Charsadda District, although their adoption is still limited. Several factors slow the widespread use of modern green technologies, including poverty, limited financial resources, lack of awareness, insufficient education, and sometimes negligence on the part of larger landowners and capitalists.

Despite these challenges, certain environmentally friendly agricultural practices are being used by local farmers. For example, I have observed the use of greenhouses and plastic tunnel systems that help crops grow earlier in the season. Some farmers also use natural fertilizers such as animal manure instead of relying entirely on chemical fertilizers, although in some cases dried dung is still used as fuel rather than fertilizer.

Modern irrigation improvements are also visible in certain areas. Concrete irrigation canals help reduce water loss, and solar-powered tube wells are gradually being introduced to support irrigation while reducing dependence on conventional energy sources. Farmers also practice crop rotation, agroforestry, poultry farming, and animal husbandry, which contribute to agricultural sustainability.

In addition, modern agricultural machinery such as threshers and wheat-cutting machines is increasingly used to improve productivity. Hybrid seeds are also commonly used to increase crop yields and support food production.

However, some agricultural practices still raise environmental concerns. For example, the burning of crop residues after harvesting contributes to air pollution and damages soil health. The widespread use of chemical pesticides is also problematic, as these chemicals can harm birds, butterflies, honeybees, and other beneficial organisms that are important for ecological balance and pollination.

These observations suggest that while some elements of green agricultural technology are present in the region, greater awareness, education, and financial support are needed to encourage farmers to adopt more environmentally sustainable practices. Government programs, agricultural extension services, and community education initiatives could play an important role in promoting green technologies that align with both environmental sustainability and the Islamic principle of responsible stewardship of the Earth.

Conclusion

Green technology in agriculture closely aligns with Islamic teachings on environmental responsibility. Both emphasize sustainability, moderation, and the preservation of natural balance.

By adopting eco-friendly agricultural technologies such as solar-powered machinery, efficient irrigation systems, precision farming, organic fertilizers, and agroforestry, farmers can increase productivity while protecting natural resources.

Islam encourages humanity to use the Earth responsibly as Khalifah (stewards), ensuring that development does not harm the environment or deprive future generations of their rights. Sustainable agricultural practices therefore represent not only an economic necessity but also a moral and spiritual responsibility.

Integrating green technology with Islamic ethical principles can help build an agricultural system that is productive, environmentally sustainable, and socially responsible.
